What is the Tcl/Tk GUI Programming Course?

• a series of 8 lessons - approximately 1 per week - everything done online and on your own time
• teaches the basics of programming to enable the creation of a simple program similar to the demo shown here
• enhanced learning through online discussion with other participants via an e-mail mailing list and weekly chat room
• course created, facilitated and monitored by an experienced software engineer

Why would I want to take this course?

• to learn how computer software really works -demystifying the  "smart machine" myth
• to learn how to download and install safe (virus free) tools for your Computer that are freely available on the Internet
• to learn how to effectively use Internet collaborative communication tools such as chat, mailing lists and email
• to learn how to create computer programs of your own
• this course is beginner level but you will still learn how to read and write files, create pull down menus and accept input from the keyboard and mouse
• it is a prerequisite for other exciting iCanProgram courses such as "Programming for Websites" etc.

What is needed?

• any kind of computer - PC with Windows 95/98/NT - PC with Linux  -  Macintosh
• you need to comfortable with the basics of your Computer's operation and its Internet access
• all the programming tools we will be using are either already on your computer or are freely available on the Internet
• desire to learn and have fun doing it

Who is this for?

• program is designed for adults of any age who have a desire to learn more about computers
• check our other course offerings if you don't fit into this age grouping

Is there a fee?

• NO
• but we expect that in return you will make a donation your local Cancer Research charity
• absolutely no additional software needs to be purchased
• all course materials are free and safely downloadable from the internet
• makes use of bundled tools on Windows or Mac such as Wordpad or Simple Text

When does the course start?

• courses start on demand (minimum of 30 students)
• there will be 8 consecutive weekly lessons
